I thought I’d first start by really introducing myself since I’ll be on here a lot. My name is Julius Shoulderblade and I’m from the big state of Montana. I had come to Colorado on a plane like most service men/women do. I had received my honorable discharge papers 22 April 2011. I was in a tough situation, as much of us find are self in, with life and where to go after a purpose has been lost. Some days purpose had seem to be lost to the far reaches of space and no chance of ever coming back to earth.

I had come to know Myron Oldbear very well in the short time we have known each other. As I believe and he claims, it was for purpose and by design. So here I am helping to spread the word about Medicine Wheel Mesa through the electricity, communication networks and right to your own eyes. Medicine Wheel Mesa can do a lot, but to its advantage more than it is not, it doesn’t have electricity to do this kind of job. Since our world has moved into the cyber/digital means it requires Medicine Wheel Mesa to travel a little outside its comfort zone to be able to reach the people that live in that world. Trust me when I say though, when you see Medicine Wheel Mesa, a computer can never offer what the natural world can.

So I promise to stay true to what I know best of Medicine Wheel Mesa to those who keep Medicine Wheel Mesa on their computer screens and those who visit and like updates. Also wish many people get the opportunity to at least check us out once on the web or visit Medicine Wheel Mesa, that is my prayer to the creator.

As you stay toned to read I believe you’ll get to know me a whole lot more! Thanks for stopping by!

What is life, happiness, growth, understanding, peace and love. I could go on but I believe you get the question.

Trying to grasp the world I live in today and I have realized, I don’t ask enough questions. I’m sure many of us struggle with the same thing. I stay up late and wonder about life and who or what is apart of it. A lot of my posts I try not to generalize and stick to what I know best, which is me. As my views tend to be out there and literally in space, but I know most of all that I’m not the only one asking such questions. As I unknowingly challenge myself most of the time with questions I’m pretty sure I won’t ever know. Take this for instance, are we really the only planet with life? Out of the billions of galaxies, and in which they have billions and billions of stars, then a star have at least one planet we are the only life?

I know life has much more meaning than the life I live day to day in the city. Even though I have no proof of that last statement but nor can anyone prove it’s wrong. I have my own truth, in that, I cannot be wrong. I wish and need to know where life begins and ends. Does it ever end? Does the questions ever end?

Commentary by Julius Shoulderblade

Is having faith not taking action when we believe action needs to be taken to control the outcome of a situation? Is faith only rewarding to the one who has faith? What does faith require a person to do? How do we know when faith demands action or emotion? Indulging in emotion mean we are faithless? Is it enough to say you have faith?

We had the Sacred Fire ceremony at Medicine Wheel Mesa that took place the day the summer solstice started and ended. A huge part of the ceremony is the purification lodge and most important what happens during that time. It requires a person to pay attention to all of their senses, making a person focus on the spirit to totally understand what is said and happens to each person involved. This was especially a monumental time for me because I was asked to speak on the topic of faith while being the pourer. Now I don’t exactly remember what I said, I did get to hear others speak.

I have come to a new understanding of faith and still learning the different aspects that encompass faith. It’s pretty basic concept that anyone could understand but very hard to direct one’s faith towards the Creator’s life plan. I see it no different than true love, wisdom, courage and many more that I call “Keys” to a happy life that takes a life time of practice to achieve. I believe none of us are born without the keys to life. We simply have to recognize how we use each key for different areas of our life. The thing that makes us unhappy while possessing these keys is misusing them.

The Creator gave us everything we needed to survive happily in this world, To acknowledge the Creator’s power shows us what he gave us. It makes us co-dependent, without the Creator we don’t truly see who we are. I am only able to speak of faith through the Creator’s vessels that we call people. They help me realize my life and where I go, which will ultimately dictate how I leave the physical realm.

When I was a kid the things I don’t remember ever worrying about was eating, sleeping or what to wear. I had faith in my parents to provide. Now how adequate my parents care was, was questionable. However, I didn’t worry about money, weather, politics or technology. As a child, worries are considered simple. During childhood I think we best demonstrate faith. Children are described as being the purest of hearts in which the human condition has not yet affected them. How do we shift our faith from our parents to the Creator? Where do we go wrong? How do we lose are natural trust that life will provide?

I have lived a long enough life to realize where I have had faith in many other things but the Creator. All it has done was cause more frustration, pain, worry and doubt in life. I put my faith in money, worldly systems, material things, people and even in my own plan to life. That if I stuck to any one of these I wouldn’t have to worry about living a good life. If I had lost faith in any one thing, that I would immediately put it in something else to fix the worry. I accepted that fear was part of life, a part of me and everyone had it. The Creator has a large enough plan for my life that he had to show me I was wrong about life. Where he had to take everything I had or would have faith in. He created an opportunity for me to find my true faith and the faith that only rest with the Creator.

Now, do I misplace faith still? I do, but knowledge that I do is the first step in changing where my faith is placed. I worry a whole lot less than I did a month ago. I realized that if I am following the life plan he has for me, that he cannot refuse to provide because it is his plan and not mine. I have to remind myself constantly and consistently that I am not living for me to just live. The second a worry confronts me I ask, “Is this something I can do with the skills the Creator gave me? If I try to change this worry, who is it for? Is this a moment in which the Creator gave me faith in him that he has already took care of it?”

I don’t know where I learned this, but know I wasn’t the first one to think of this. That when I ask for a change in myself, for whatever reason for whomever, from the Creator. He doesn’t give me it directly as I wish. Creator allows me the option to create the change I need to best serve him, any other change for any other function is an act of my own selfishness.

Even as I write this I becomes a learning experience. When it comes down to it and I think about it more, any key the Creator gives me for my life plan is true. Any skill used for anything other is useless in life.

Commentary by Julius Shoulderblade

A sudden darkness over takes my world. Feeling of random emotions fly past me like birds on the wind. Some even manage to catch the current through my heart. A hole straight from one side to the other described to be rock carved as smooth by water. I have attended to this hole daily, nothing short of clockwork. Performing maintenance and up keep to allow passage for whomsoever wises to pass through. The edges are fragilely sculpted with detailed patterns that took me my whole life to chisel.

At moments I have entertained the idea to close and seal shut the unused space it creates, even attempted but failed. I sat for long periods of time patiently awaiting arrival of something or someone to occupy it for a while and temporarily set negative emotion on a detour. However, it is nothing more than a traffic tunnel for wanders and spectators’ glance. The human condition to produce potent and toxic feelings is the weather that never ceases to end. Many have been diverted due to intense storms. Some have been lost while trying to navigate and explore what makes the hole what it is. I, myself, never adventured into this hole until now.

The foreign land more mysterious than the deepest oceans I hesitate to step inside. Picking up my left foot and the mechanics of my skeleton shifts weight to the opposite side. Muscles are put into action contracting and expanding to move the bones forward. Just before I cross the threshold, a feeling I am to fall into a the gravitational pull of a black hole delivers a punch to the gut. In that second to let go of fear that kept me away from what is, is the only way to satisfy my curiosity.

How I know there are secrets there that many people wonder about in their own lives, I have not one clue. I believe over time I hide them from my self’s destructive ways to preserve them. What they are, once again are faced down poker cards. While some people spend their whole lives searching high and low of the physical world to still be left with the absent of something.

I complete my first step to conclusively experience a sudden rush of a pull so intense it became a roller coaster. Huge ascends and steep descends through emptiness. I had the desire to stop but knew I must keep going. Coming to an opening there are three tornado funnels equally spaced apart around the edge of my view. New emotions have been transformed from the ignorance of fear by the jaw dropping scenery. It seemed though it wasn’t a good nor bad feeling. I had begun a quick approach to a glowing earth and disappeared as fast as it was shown.

I open my eyes to find my body exactly in the same position I fell asleep. One thing out of place are the shadows that usually are painted on the walls by the in coming street light from windows. I refused to blink afraid to lose what I see.

Thin metal ran at angles in a vertical direction, holding in place glass. When I looked across what was the living room all I have in sight are faint, little lights twinkling. I gaze around making sure it wasn’t a dream. The stars that fell against black background of the walls started to fade after a few minutes, but not before it gave birth to the most quiet and serene environment. Turning back into the living room I knew it to be was unwanted.

The imaginative picture I have of my heart being empty and the dearly missing of something pledged my mind. Trying to grasp the reasoning why all that took place because that was the second time I saw that planet. I believe the Creator is telling me to fill the void with myself. When I learn to let go of fear amazing things happen and taking that risk is necessary to creating a beautiful place of the empty space I had made.

I believe everything has reason and purpose. So the fact I have reserved this place for a future reason it would be a shame to not use the opportunity to build myself a world so large in such a small place. As everything else, it needs the Creator to first step in. How I imagine my world resembles a lot of Medicine Wheel Mesa’s features. Having been away for almost a month surely has had its impact. Understanding the peace I can have compared to the feelings I have is hard to mentally/physically/emotionally/spiritually accept the world I tried to conform to. There is no return point and nothing at present time I feel most at home and can work on being part of the truest spirits of the world.

I was born in 1940 and at the writing of this article I am 71 years old. I grew up on a small forty acre farm in central Oklahoma and we didn’t get electricity until I was twelve years old. We grew all of our own food except things like sugar, spices and flour, and we stored hundreds of quarts of canned food in a root cellar each year.

Currently there are lots of people blaming the generations of the past for the terrible shape our environment is in today and that greatly offends me. The people promoting the so-called “go-green” slogan as a way to save our environment are the same people who walk around with the latest model of a cell phone up to their ears most of they day, or sit at their fancy computers hours on end staring at their latest facebook or email messages. These are the same people who drive their gas-guzzling cars a few blocks to the health food stores where they buy their tofu that is packaged in plastic cartons. They drink their purified–vitamins added–water out of plastic bottles and their homes are filled with all of the latest electrical “gadgets” known to man.

My generation didn’t need a “go-green” slogan to make people feel all warm and fuzzy inside because we were the true protectors of the environment. If we bought milk, soda pop, or beer at a store it was in a glass bottle that was returned to the store and sent back to the manufacturer where it was washed and reused over and over again…this was real recycling.

Children in my generation either walked or rode a bicycle to school. Today young people either drive their own cars or have their “taxi moms” drive them there and pick them up, burning high priced gasoline in the process.

In my generation, if we mowed the grass at all, it was with a push mower. The modern generation uses a gas-powered riding mower to mow the grass that has been made green with commercial fertilizers and lots of water.

In my generation, women got together to make quilts and blankets that were sewn from scrap pieces of old clothes and other scrap material. The modern generation goes to the fancy malls to buy their blankets that are packaged in large, clear plastic bags.

In my generation, men got together to help each other work on their cars to keep them running. The modern generation can’t even change the oil in their cars…they must drive them to the nearest “Jiffy Lube” shop to get the oil changed for them.

In my generation, our mothers made wonderful homemade breads, pies, and cakes and we sat around the kitchen table as a family enjoying these wonderful treats. This generation drives to the local “donut shop or bread shop” for a cup of coffee and sweet roll.

In my generation, people worked hard physically to provide for their families and rarely needed to go to the doctor to have the latest drug prescriptions filled. Today, we have an overweight society that gets exercise by driving to some “commercial exercise facility” so they can work out on electrically powered “fitness equipment”.

In my generation, our pets ate what was left over from our meals. Today, the pet food industry packages pet food in cans, plastic containers and large paper bags and makes billions of dollars selling it to people who drive to the store to pick it up. In my generation, our pet toys was a stick we threw for the dog to chase. Today the pet toy business has become a huge industry, making all kinds of pet toys out of plastics, and other materials that come from Mother Earth and are eventually thrown away.

In my generation, we had very little garbage to be disposed of, and what little we had was burned in a 55 gallon metal drum maybe 3-4 times a year. In the modern generation, garbage collection is a huge industry. Giant garbage trucks drive around all day long, burning lots of fuel, collecting countless millions of tons of garbage from our instant gratification–throw away–society. That garbage is then hauled many miles outside the city to a giant “garbage dump” (currently called a “land fill”) where huge earth moving equipment covers it over with dirt.

In my generation, we didn’t have to be told we should “recycle”. We did it automatically…by necessity. We patched our clothes when they got holes in them. When our children out grew their clothes we gave their clothes to other families with children who could wear them (and eventually when those clothes wore out they became patches for other clothes or pieces of colored cloth for making quilts and blankets). We fixed things that wore out…we didn’t throw them away. My generation made things out of metal that would last for generations. However, today’s generation is the throw away generation. It even throws away the entire plastic razor when the razor blade gets a little dull. Our modern generation is the plastic generation that has the attitude, “I’ll use this for a little while until the next bigger and better plastic gadget comes along and then I’ll throw this one away”.

Where I grew up in rural central Oklahoma there was no trash along those dusty, rut-filled, dirt roads. The farmers even mowed the grass along the side of the roads for hay to feed to their cows. Today our modern super highways and clogged freeways are strewn with all kinds of trash.

My generation didn’t need a catchy ”go-green” slogan because we lived it…it was our lifestyle…it was part of our value system. We were conservationists because we had to be. We took pride in the few possessions we had and we made them last as long as possible because they were difficult to replace. THINGS weren’t nearly as important as family and friends. Sharing what we had with others was a way of life. We wanted to help others in need because we were keenly aware that we often had needs and we knew others would help meet those needs. Therefore, community was important…family was important…and the individual was important because of the gifts, skills and abilities he or she brought to the community. We knew that the community was only as strong as the individuals who made up that community. Therefore, the individual was always ready to share what he or she had for the good of the community. As a result, little was wasted. Resources were few, but the few things we had were used and shared by all who needed them.

Today the “go-green” slogan as become big business. Today our plastic-made, throw-away society is composed of individuals with a “me-first” mentality and a “throw-away” attitude. People today don’t want things to last for a long time because they know the next generation of the “latest fad or new gadget” will hit the market within a few weeks and they will just have to have it in order to be “chic and cool”. After all, today’s generation is looking for things to help them get out of work, not things to help them do their work better. Today’s society is looking for things to make life “easier” because they believe that easier is better. And it is the desire for a life of ease that has created most of the problems we face in our modern society.

At Medicine Wheel Mesa we don’t need a “go-green” sign to remind us of the need to take care of our environment. We live without electricity or running water. We cook over a wood fire. We heat our little round hogan (log house) with wood heat. We use candles or oil lamps for light at night. We do our work by hand. We have few things, and it is over 100 miles to a shopping center, and therefore, we take care of the things we have so they will last.

If you really want to “go-green” make it more than a slogan…make it a lifestyle in which living with less and less is much more important than living with more and more. Discover that happiness isn’t found in material things but in SPIRITUAL strength. Place more importance in being strongly connected to our Creator than having the “right connections” within our materialistic society.

As I watched the terrible images on TV of people trying to flee the horrifying devestation following the recent Japanese earthquake, it became obvious that it isn’t enough to just store food for the future in case we are faced with a disaster in our area, that food supply must be very portable. Therefore, light weight, dried foods must be a major part of our disaster planning. For example, a couple of pounds of dried fruit equals many pounds of the same fruit that has been canned. In addition, for the most part, canned food is very bulky and heavy, whereas, dried food is not only light weight but takes up very little space, and both factors are very important in case people must quickly flee a disaster in their area.
Also, the Japanese quake made me aware that in a disaster the only way to escape the area may be on feet. So, the only things people may be able to take with them is what they can carry on their backs. That makes dried food an even more important item to have on hand when planning how to prepare for serious emergencies.

Commercially dried food is quite expensive. Therefore, I suggest you invest in a dehydrator. Small ones are very affordable and if you buy fresh fruit, vegetables and meat when it is on sale, you can dry your own food quite economically.

I was recently given a book that I think every woman (and open-minded man) should read. The book title is, Women Who Run With The Wolves: Myths And Stories Of The Wild Woman Archetype. The author’s name is Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Ph.D. and the book was published in 1992 by Ballantine Books.

In the introduction to the book, Dr. Estes states, “Healthy wolves and healthy women share certain psychic characteristics: keen sensing, playful spirit, and a heightened capacity for devotion. Wolves and women are relational by nature, inquiring, possessed of great endurance and strength. They are deeply intuitive, intensely concerned with their young, their mate and their pack. They are experienced in adapting to constantly changing circumstances; they are fiercely stalwart and very brave.”

The book contains a wide variety of ancient myths and legends that compare–to varying degrees–women with wolves. Women can learn much about themselves by reading the book, and men could learn (if they were open minded) much about women and their great capacities by reading the book.

The main theme of the book is a comparision of the wolf in the wild with the “wild” untamed spirit that our Creator wove into the personality and spirtual nature of every woman. However, the “wild” theme is not used in a negative way, but as an extremely positive description of the unlimited mental, emotional and spiritual power that exists in all women.

So to all women (and to all emotionally mature men) I say, it will be well worth your time and effort to find and read, “Women Who Run With The Wolves. It is probably available on Amazon.Com.

I want to thank the many people who have helped us over the years make Medicine Wheel Mesa a place people want to visit over and over. Some come to begin their Spiritual Journeys. Others come who have been on their Sacred Journey for many years. Many come to participate in the various Sacred Ceremonies that are an on-going part of the Cycle Of Sacred Seasons. Some come for rest and renewal while still other come to work on the many projects that are always in progress. Regardless of the reason why people come to “the mesa”, they are always welcome because people are the reason medicine wheel mesa exists.

This spring we are starting several new projects at the mesa. 1) We are planting two new vegetable gardens. 2) We are developing several new “shade arbors”, which are very important in a desert setting. 3) We continue to work on hogan #3 and hope to have it completed by mid summer. 4) New hogans are being planned and will be started. 5) We are working on “scripts” for a few short videos designed to better communicate how people should prepare themselves for the Coming Earth Changes And Time Of Great Cleansing. 6) We are in the planning stage for a new Smoke House that will enable us to smoke fish and a wide variety of meats.

So thank you my dear friends for making Medicine Wheel Mesa “The People’s Place“. Come back often and stay as long as you wish. If you would like to visit Medicine Wheel Mesa for the first time, please email us at: oldbearm@gmail.com and we will correspond with you concerning how that can happen. We do not charge any fees for coming to the mesa. However, we do have a few simple rules and expectation for those visiting us at the mesa.
